How NFC business cards work, in plain English

An NFC business card holds a small chip that stores the web address of your profile. Hold a phone with NFC switched on near the card and it opens that page in its browser, with no app needed. A printed QR code does the same job for phones that can't read NFC.

What's inside the card

Inside the card is a small NFC chip holding one thing: the web address of your profile. It doesn’t store your phone number, your logo or your job title. Those live on the page the address points to.

That is why the card itself never needs reprinting when your details change. The address stays the same, and the page behind it is what gets updated.

What happens when someone taps

When a phone with NFC switched on is held near the card, it reads the address and offers to open it. The profile opens in the phone’s browser. There is no app to install and nothing to pair.

The person sees your name, role and photo, with one-tap buttons to call, WhatsApp, email, get directions or visit your website, and a Save contact button that puts your details straight into their phone.

Which phones can read it

Most recent iPhones and Android phones can read NFC. On an iPhone, hold the card near the top of the phone. On Android, the reader is usually in the middle of the back, and NFC sometimes has to be switched on in settings first.

If a phone can’t read NFC, or the person would rather not tap, they can scan the QR code printed on the card with the camera. It opens exactly the same page, which is why every card should carry one.

Buying in India: what to check

Most of the difference between NFC business cards is not the tap, which works the same way on every card. It is what sits around it. Before you pay, check these:

  • What the card price includes. Does it cover building and hosting your profile page, a QR code and a proof to approve before printing?
  • Any yearly fee. Some providers charge a subscription to keep your profile live, which changes what you pay over two years.
  • Changing details later. You should be able to update your number, role or links without a new card.
  • Delivery and timing. Where the card is made, how it reaches you and how long it takes.

In Kolkata, LynqTap cards are made to order here and shipped across India by courier. Orders are usually within a week once you approve the design, and in Kolkata we can also help you set up in person. Every order is quoted on WhatsApp and confirmed in writing before anything is printed.
